These photos are a documentation of the Yamakasa Festival, a 763 year running festival held in Fukuoka, Japan. Teams of up to 200 and more are organized by geographic area within Fukuoka. They train up to 6 months in advance, preparing for a 15 minute run in which the teammates carry the Yama (hand made wooden float/ shrine) through a winding path in the city. The purpose of the race is to promote cooperation and teammanship within the community. The winners get bragging rights.
